The short answer
Over three years, a $400 mini PC running continuously costs roughly $700 to $950 all-in once electricity is included, against $720 to $1,440 for an equivalent cloud VPS at $20 to $40 a month. The sticker prices are closer than people assume - the real difference is that the VPS includes replacement hardware, network redundancy and someone else's operational time, none of which appear on the mini PC's price.
The usual comparison puts a purchase price next to a monthly fee. This one includes electricity at $0.17/kWh and counts three years on both sides. The VPS figure already includes replacement hardware and someone else's on-call.

What the mini PC actually costs over three years
- Hardware: $350 to $600 for something with 32GB RAM and a decent SSD
- Electricity: a 15W idle / 35W typical box runs roughly $8 to $14 a month depending on your rate
- Replacement risk: one SSD or PSU failure inside three years is entirely plausible - budget for it
- Your time: patching, backups and the evening something breaks while you are away

- $20 to $40 a month for comparable RAM, which is $720 to $1,440 over three years
- Bandwidth beyond the included allowance, which is where surprise bills come from
- Backups, usually an extra percentage on top - and worth paying

- Working with data that should not leave your house? The mini PC wins outright
- Want to learn hardware and networking? The mini PC teaches more, precisely because it can break
- Running something other people depend on? Pay for the VPS and stop thinking about it
- Best answer for many people is both: the mini PC for bulk and experimentation, a cheap VPS for anything public
Common questions
Is a mini PC powerful enough to be a real server?
For most self-hosted workloads, comfortably. A modern mini PC with 32GB of RAM will run a dozen containers without complaint. The limits you will hit first are network reliability and your home connection's upload speed, not CPU.
What about the noise and heat?
A mini PC is genuinely liveable in a room where you work - most are near-silent at idle. This is the single biggest practical difference from second-hand rack hardware, and the reason most rack homelabs end up in a garage or switched off.
